Blood Drive

Tuesday, March 8, 12:30-5:30pm, in the fellowship hall. Every day ordinary people are saved by some pretty extraordinary people: People who give blood. OWLs

The OWLs, a group for those 55+, fly to Wabasha on Wednesday, March 9, to see Lark Toys, the National Eagle Center, and enjoy lunch at Stacy’s Kitchen. Meet at the church at 9am. RSVP to Brian by Tuesday, March 8: owls@firstlu.org or 608.526.9700. The OWLs’ next potluck will be Wednesday, March 16, at noon in the narthex. We will again provide lunch for mid-day Lenten worshippers, so bring extra to share. 

Preschool Open House & Registration

Join us for our open house on Thursday, March 10, from 4:30-5:30pm. Meet the teachers and check out the classrooms! Preschool registration is March 14 from 9:30-noon for church members and 10:30am-noon for the community.

Peer Ministry Lock-In

Drawing from the Well

First Lutheran invites all women to participate in this discipline, where we will explore the idea of wellness, exploring an aspect of the ELCA’s wellness wheel at each meeting. They meet on the second Saturday of the month, from 8:30am–1:30pm. Next retreat: Sat., March 12; the focus will be on vocational wellness. Contact Pastor Karyn for more info: karyn@firstlu.org.

Candy Sale

First Lutheran Women will sell the last of the nuts and candies in the narthex on Sunday, March 13. Buy a sweet treat for Easter and help fund new flooring in Fellowship Hall.

Teen Clothes Closet and Prom

With prom season quickly approaching, First Lutheran’s Teen Clothes Closet is accepting donations of prom dresses. If you do not want to drop them off in the entry donation basket, please contact Lori Lunney at 608.769.6790 or Bridget Crave at 608.790.7432 to arrange to drop dresses off with them. Also, please let girls or families who know who may be unable to afford a prom dress any other way about the Clothes Closet. Appointments can be made by calling the church office at 608.783.2236.

Other current needs at the closet include boys’ jeans in all sizes, but especially 32x34 and 32x36; girls’ leggings; jewelry and purses.

Palm Sunday Breakfast Fundraiser

March 20, 9–10:30am. Anyone going on a trip/camp this summer can help work to raise money. Sign up to work & donate food at the Welcome Center and at firstlu.org/palmsun.

COME FOR SUPPER

First Lutheran is assisting with Come for Supper on Tuesday, March 22, at Our Savior’s in La Crosse. First Lutheran will help with food donations and volunteering to serve and clean up. The sign-up sheets are at the Welcome Center. Call Gloria Kubiak if you have questions, 608.498.2762.

Small Group: Knowing Me, Knowing Them

Why are my kids so different from me? Join with other parents in a 5-week small group to discover your parenting personality type using the Enneagram, and explore how your personality affects your parenting style. Knowing Me Knowing Them by Tracy Tresidder, Margaret Loftus, and Jacqui Pollock will help you learn how to connect and stay connected with your children, whether they are newborns or adult children. Grandparents will find it helpful too. Led by Carla Stanton, this group will meet Sunday nights, April 3–May 5, 6:30–8pm.

Mabel Anderson Scholarship

Applications for the Mabel Anderson Scholarship are now available. Completed applications are due no later than noon on April 8.

Students may apply if they will graduate from high school in the spring and have plans to pursue post-secondary education. The application includes writing an essay and completing a worksheet that reflects the student’s involvement in church activities.The First Lutheran Foundation reviews applications and selects the recipients.

Application forms are available at firstlu.org/scholarship, at the Welcome Center in the narthex, and at the church office.

ELCA WALK FOR WATER

Sat, April 9, Valley View Mall. Experience firsthand what it is like to carry a 5-gallon jug of water through a simulated water collection experience. Throughout the simulation each person follows one of four “stories” to guide them along the track. Along the way, participants are confronted with different obstacles that help them realize some of the struggles those walking for water may encounter.

Sermon Notes & Audio

Sermon notes are available from ushers during worship; they are also available online, along with the sermon audio, at firstlu.org/sermons. Sermon notes are meant to be used… 

  • During worship to write down things you hear that surprise, shock, or otherwise strike a chord with you. 
  • At home, to think about what you heard during the sermon and what it means to you, in your life, right now. 
  • In small groups, to share your thoughts and to listen to others talk about how they heard the sermon and were moved by it.
